FDA Issues Warning to Erection/Tanning Drug Maker
HENDERSONVILLE, TN — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cautioned Melanocorp, Inc. to stop selling its injection-administered drug, Melanotan II via its company website, Melanocorp.com or face the consequences. The drug was also marketed as an erection aid and an appetite suppressant, with those being the two biggest side effects the company touted. Melanocorp also claimed the drug prevented rosacea, a skin disease that causes red, blotchy patches of skin primarily on the face.”This product is being mislabeled, marketed and sold illegally as a preventative against skin cancer, and as a tanning agent,” said Steven Galson, M.D., M.P.H. director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in a press statement. “Protecting the public from unapproved products such as this that make unsubstantiated claims and may pose a health risk is a top priority at the FDA.”
The FDA is advising all those using the drug to stop immediately and consult with their doctors if they are experiencing anything unpleasant as a result of taking Melanotan and Melanotan II, neither of which were ever approved by the FDA. The drugs were originally developed by researchers at the University of Arizona in the late 1990’s who were looking to prevent skin cancer. The porn star-enhancing trifecta of tanning/sexual arousal/appetite suppressant led to the drug being nicknamed “The Barbie Pill” in its early, pre-release stages.
