Email Claiming Obama Sex Vid Packs Spyware Payload
CYBERSPACE — With celebrity sex tapes still making the rounds, it can be tempting to check out the latest, especially since it allegedly stars one of the most internationally recognized politicians in the modern world: Barack Obama. As is so often the case, however, the link circulating with this tantalizing tidbit only wants to fuck computers. According to the blog of Graham Cluley, security firm Sophos’ senior technology consultant, an email currently making its way around the internet attracts attention with the subject line “Obama sex video!!!” and claims to come from “infonews@obama.com.”
The truth, of course, is far more sinister and far less sexy.
Anyone foolish enough to click on the link will find that it’s not a video featuring the Democratic candidate for president at his most turgidly naked. Instead, they’ll find an .exe file that distracts attention with a little bit of amateur porn while the Trojan attached gets busy fondling files.
The Trojan in question is Mal/Hupig-D, which Cluley says seeks out Windows boxes and steals passwords and bank account info.
As usual, experts recommend that computer users keep their anti-spy an anti-virus software up to date – and exercise extreme caution when confronted by email claiming to be official but packed full of spelling and punctuation errors.
