Digital Playground Says Fans are Happy to Feel Blu
VAN NUYS, CA — Porn may not have been the deciding factor in the legendary HD DVD vs. Blu-ray techno wars, but the victorious emergence of Blu-ray as the high-def format of choice has been decisive in purchasing decisions of porn lovers. Pirates director and Digital Playground co-founder, Joone, explained to TG Daily.com that “…DVD sales are down dramatically and customers apparently are shifting to Blu-ray quickly.”
Although having a definitive format “opens new opportunities for large studios,” Joone cautions that Blue-ray will also “bring massive challenges for smaller companies in the business.”
According to TG Daily, Digital Playground possesses an impressive 40-percent of the adult DVD market, a number that – coupled with the company’s pre-existing plan to release Blu-ray content – could be key to surviving the choppy waters forecast for the industry.
Joone finds the public’s love of Blu-ray unsurprising, given that his company has been “selling two Blu-ray discs for every HD DVD.” Additionally, the consumer’s affection for the internet has strongly affected the sales of traditional DVDs, especially those of low and medium video quality to begin with. As Joone sees it, given the appeal of inexpensive content online and multiple features associated with Blu-ray, the switch was inevitable.
That, at least, was the gamble that Digital Playground wisely played when it began shooting all its videos in HD four years ago and became what it calls “the only significant adult film production firm” to produce 1080p Blu-ray discs in quantity, with plans to cease production of HD DVDs at the end of March.
