Sometimes the regular horizontal scanlines can be over-used or just plain boring. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a diagonal scanline pattern which is much more appealing because of it’s rarity. Just take note though, if you overuse this one, it will also become boring.
Let’s start by making the pattern:
1. Create a new canvas, 3 x 4 pixels, making sure the background is transparent. Zoom into 1600%.
2. Next, using the pencil tool , draw a diagonal line similar to this one:
3. Now select the whole image by selecting the “select>all” menu command or pressing “CTRL + A” and go to the “edit>define pattern…” menu command. Name the pattern with a label of your choice.
4. To use the pattern, make a new canvas, select the paint bucket tool and fill the background with any color other than black. I used a dark purple.
5. Make a new layer by pressing the new layer button and now select the “edit>fill” menu command. Use these settings:
Use: Pattern
Custom Pattern:
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Make sure the “Preserve Transparency” box is unchecked.
Press “OK” and the layer should fill with your pattern. I changed the opacity to 50% so the effect was not too strong.
As you can see, this scanline is much more interesting than the usual scanline and can be used for many backgrounds.
