Brightening Up Colors
Software: Photoshop 6
Skill Level: Basic
In this tutorial you will learn how to intensify the colors of an image; subtle color manipulation can bring out a picture’s details and produce a high quality effect.
The image below has lost some of its brilliance, so we’ll brighten the sea and the sky, then bring back some of the vibrance to the foliage and the hills in the background. This will achieve a controlled, saturated image.
Step 1: First add a Selective Color Adjustment Layer as shown below:
Step 3: This time select Greens from the dropdown menu and type in these settings: Cyan= +50, Magenta= -100, Yellow= +50, Black= -50. This helps intensify and lighten the colors of the foliage in the background.
Step 4: Again from the dropdown menu, select Yellows and set Cyan to -100. This brings back the yellow areas to the foliage, creating a natural and tonally correct feel.
Step 5: Now for a final subtle adjustment. Duplicate the background layer and drag it so that it is the top layer, as shown below. Then change its Blending Mode to Overlay and its opacity to 50%. Your layers should look like this:
Below is the final product. With some playing around with the Adjustment Levels you can bring out the best of any picture.
