The software is designed to cover the tracks of Web surfers by encrypting potentially revealing data such as the browser’s cache, cookies, history file and file downloads. The software is marketed specifically at the home user who is concerned about privacy, but it is not intended for use at the office or as a means to cover up any illegal activity. The arrival of Privacy View and its accompanying affiliate program gives adult Webmasters a new product to sell on their Web sites.
“Privacy View launched here at Cybernet Expo yesterday, on the first day,” explained PrivacyView Software’s President, Martin Greif. “It is a privacy product that allows adults to download whatever they want, encrypt it on their hard drive, hide their favorites, cookies and history so that they can be secure, without having to erase it, so that later on they can continue on their merry surfing way. We’ve gotten a pretty good reception here from the Webmasters.”
Grief showcased his product at Cybernet Expo with the hope of convincing attendees to offer the product for sale on their adult Web sites. What’s in it for the Webmaster? Each sale a Webmaster generates earns that Webmaster a cut of the profits.
“We launched the product and the affiliate program at the same time yesterday, said Greif. “The product itself has got a 30 day trial, downloadable. At the end of the 30 days the customer can buy it or uninstall it, it’s their choice, and assuming they buy it we go back and give the Webmaster, the referring site, $12.00 per sale. We’re brand new so we don’t have any conversion rates to share yet but we’re hoping after the 30 day trials start to happen and people sign up we’ll be able to announce some really significant conversion rates.”
The adult industry is no stranger to privacy products. Many Web sites offer competing products such as Evidence Eliminator, but Greif says that his product has an advantage over traditional privacy options.
“Our logic was people don’t want to erase content and their traces, they do it because they don’t have any other choice,” said Greif. “Really what people want to do is store it on their hard drives and be able to continue on their merry surfing way. Using [browser] history for an example, if I erase my history and I just downloaded my first three photos off of this really interesting site, I want to remember where it was … I want to keep the history.”
“We’re also hoping this will help Webmasters potentially have better conversion rates for themselves,” said Greif. “They get people who come and look at their sites and they think, ‘Yeah I’d like join but, you know, I’m afraid, or I don’t want to download that content’ … now a Webmaster can say, ‘Here, download and surf in complete privacy.’ Hopefully that will drive some extra sign-ups for our Webmaster marketers.”
So how safe is Privacy View? Can a surfer sleep at night knowing that his wife or kids aren’t looking at the porn he downloaded earlier in the day?
“They can be reasonably secure about that,” said Greif. “As with any software product, if your wife or kids are computer geniuses and hackers, you know, there’s limits to what we can do. But to the average person out there, they’re more than secure and it’s a non-issue … if their spouse works at NSA, [they] might not want to buy this.”
