Cursed to Dwell Among Big, Beautiful Bosoms
By Peter Berton
MIAMI – One has to feel sorry for Elliot James. Every working day, in his role as associate editor of SCORE magazine and editor of the associated website Scoreland.com, he must get up-close-and-personal with some of the most luscious busty models in all of adult.
On second thought, forget feeling sorry for the man. Perhaps one’s thoughts would be more profitably focused on sucking up to him.
With that in mind, YNOT.com asked James who one has to kill or bribe to get a job at SCORE.
YNOT.com: Exactly how did you stumble into this gig at SCORE?
Elliot James: I had been writing, and sometimes taking pictures, for all types of magazines, local weeklies and publishing companies. As a big-bust guy, I used to buy Gent and Hustler’s Busty Beauties, and I bought the first copy of SCORE, which was a bimonthly during its initial phase.
There was a column about breasts titled “Mammalogy.” I remember the author’s pen name, “Orion Jeweb.” The column was written in a scholarly, historical, mythological style, like the articles in the 1950s digest-style magazine Sexology. It was well done, but I thought it would be difficult to sustain a column, issue after issue, so fanatically devoted only to the female mammary gland.
I sent John Fox, at that time SCORE magazine’s editor-in-chief — and now chief executive officer and president — a pitch letter and a sample prototype column. It was not my intent to replace “Orion,” whoever he or she was. My pitch was to write a regular column not only about big breasts, but also about the models in the magazine, plus breast-centered news items, SCORE videos and products, clothing and bras for busty women, comic books, artists who drew busty women, and so on.
Mr. Fox liked the idea, responded quickly and gave me the green light. My first column was in the January 1993 SCORE. I’m still writing it monthly.
It was John Fox who thought up the title “Boob Beat,” although I pondered “SCORE Board,” also. I try to write in an objective, non-judgmental way, as if I were writing a newspaper article.
My code has always been never to write something I wouldn’t say to a person’s face, because who the hell am I? I dislike gossip. The internet has become a place to belittle, insult and criticize people anonymously.
Tell us about the history of the SCORE Group.
Our CEO John Fox began working in big-bust publishing in 1974. He and several partners founded SCORE magazine in 1992. SCORE showcases only busty women, both natural and augmented.
The success of SCORE led to Voluptuous, which is also a big-boob magazine but features only natural-breasted girls, no implants. Today we also publish Naughty Neighbors, Newcummers, Leg Sex, XL Girls, 40Something, 50PlusMilfs, 18Eighteen, Bootylicious and various special editions.
We also produce the website equivalent of each title, as well as DVDs. So there is a synergy to what we produce: print, web, video.
As editor, what do you do?
Write copy, edit photosets and schedule content. I also work in the anti-piracy department, proofread, write scripts for videos, look for new big-bust models, reply to reader emails and letters, run the magazine contests, do some social networking, write blog pieces, conduct interviews and work in several other areas.
OK, but what is it really like behind the scenes?
Deadlines. Deadlines. Deadlines.
Who are some of the most remarkable busty models you’ve dealt with?
They are all remarkable because they’re doing something — nude modeling — that most people don’t do. They have courage to bare all to the world.
The models I have met personally — just a fraction of the total number of models we or our contributors photograph — are very interesting and colorful people. There’s a misconception that adult modeling is all about hardcore sex. The web has fostered this. But some of our all-time-most-popular models have been solo models only.
What do you like best about your job?
SCORE’s Boob Cruises were two of the most fun weeks of my life. I had a blast, even though they were essentially “work weeks” for the SCORE staff. I didn’t know what sleep was.
I went on the third cruise, in 1997, and my assignment was to write the ship’s log — a daunting project since they wanted 26,000 words. That’s like writing a paperback.
It was just amazing to see all of these SCORE models all over the ship and the beaches with their tits hanging out everywhere, day and night. Tons of activities, scuba if you were into scuba, great food, postcard locations.
I missed the cruise in ’98, the biggest one of them all, and then went on the last cruise in 2000. That was a smaller version, because the ’98 cruise was just too big.
Is there any downside to working with the world’s bustiest models?
Finding new ones! It’s one of the toughest jobs in the world.
This may sound ridiculous, but beauty contestants are a dime a dozen. Finding girls with really big tits who will pose nude is like treasure hunting. It takes a lot of time and effort.
Business-wise, how has SCORE dealt with making money in the Internet Age?
We are doing okay. You have to move forward with the times and the technology, whether you like it or not. Because they’ll move forward with or without you.
Some publishers didn’t get into the internet and DVD production, and that was a mistake. They depended too much on print. Mavety, publisher of Juggs, is no longer active, I’m told.
But piracy is hurting everyone. The copyright laws need to change on an international level, and lawmakers are moving too slowly.
How does the SCORE Group deal with piracy?
We have a DMCA department, and I am part of it. I think a lot of studios have given up or just don’t care that they’re being ripped off by overseas criminals who may be outside the reach of the U.S. legal system. We care.
What is something people don’t know about you?
I donate money to animal shelters and ranches instead of spending it on lap dances. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
So…. What does an average guy have to do to spend a day with SCORE models?
Go to Las Vegas. Almost all of the American models live there!
Seriously, you’re welcome to have the Scoreland guided tour anytime you’re in town.
