City Demands Registration of All Adult Business Employees
LAYTON, UT — Who knows what kind of person removes their clothes, washes dishes, works a cash register, runs a vacuum cleaner, or creates a work schedule in an adult business? The city of Layton, UT will soon know all of those things, thanks to an ordinance freshly adopted forcing anyone who wants to work in such a place to register – or face the legal consequences.Although registration is free, those who don’t like the idea of being singled out and monitored merely because they work in a controversial legal establishment can expect to pay up to $2,500 in fines or spend as much as six months in jail.
The ever-popular justification for the forced registration is fighting prostitution.
Recommended to the City Council by City Attorney Gary Crane, the code allows sting operations to add individual non-registration compliance to any list of offenses, adding a class B misdemeanor to accusations of wrong-doing.
“We need to know their background,” Crane insists, adding that “It’s not uncommon for these employees to conduct some of their business activities outside of the jurisdiction with whom they are licensed. Layton doesn’t want to lose track of them.”
Mostly likely aimed at those employed as escorts, who already need to be licensed in other cities and counties, Crane’s plan would also affect anyone who works for an adult business, regardless of their job duties.
