China to Offer Rewards to “Porn Snitches”
BEIJING, CHINA — Chinese authorities believe they’ve found a way to get rid of the porn and dissident material that remains on the Web behind the Great Firewall of China: They plan to begin offering rewards to citizens who rat out the publishers. The rewards porn snitches will receive are as-yet unspecified, but an unnamed government spokesperson told the official Xinhua news service the prizes would be of value to good citizens.
Although authorities said they made “notable progress” in the month-long Web clean-up crusade that began January 5th, some sites continue to sidestep the government’s efforts. People’s Republic agencies closed 1,911 sites in 30 days, but they couldn’t pin down a few that shift between URLs or hide the offensive material deep inside, according to Xinhua.
China’s campaign against offensive Web content targets material “violating public morality and harming the physical and mental health of youth and young people,” including violence, libel and smut.
Xinhua reported that by the end of January, 41 people had been detained for publishing porn online.
