Buster Brown – Bringing the Adult Industry to You One Picture at A Time
If you’ve been to YNOT Cammunity, AVN, Exxxotica and more, chances are you’ve met Barry Brown along the way – either that or you’ve been captured by his camera.
For the last 15 years, Barry, better known by his nickname Buster, has been a staple at some of the top adult industry conventions, premieres and award ceremonies. A specialist in taking great pictures that capture the fun of the event he excels as a press/wire photographer. A true professional, Buster has pursued his love behind the camera for decades and has been featured in heavy hitter publications like Rolling Stone, Spin, Penthouse, Hustler, and more.
Enjoy this interview with Buster where YNOT finally gets a chance to put him under the lens vs. the other way around.
What brought you to photography and how did you end up shooting for the adult industry?
I grew up in a wedding, mainstream photography and video business. Since the age of 13, I worked for my father as a light man and took over the business (when he passed away).
In 2000 one of my military clients asks if I wanted to go to InterNEXT in Las Vegas.
I had always photographed models in boudoir and nude. I went and it was like any other convention/trade show, but it was the back end of the adult industry (the tech side). I met adult actor/director, Bill Margold, and he told me “Fuck these computer geeks… do you want to go to the real show?”
He got me into AVN – I was 23 years old.
Where did you get your nickname, “Buster” from?
I knew Ben Dover was taken already ten years before I got in. I was really thinking about Thommy Salami… but Buster was already a nickname some of my friends used.
Obviously “Buster” came from the shoe company – and I wore those shoes growing up. But the name stuck. Most people I encounter tell me that the name brings back nostalgia from their childhood and every time someone meets me for the first time and asks my name, I tell them Buster Brown. Right away they say, “I know you, I heard of you!”
Why do you like shooting for adult and what are some of the challenges?
What I like about shooting for the adult industry is the conventions. I enjoy socializing and networking with all the different company owners as well as with all of the talent.
The challenges of the photography industry in general are the use of shooting with cell phones and the merging of companies who no longer have a need for a professional.
Tell us about one of your favorite shoots and how you keep things fun.
One year during AVN at the Venetian Hotel I was working for Penthouse Magazine. Besides shooting their giant booth with 20+ Penthouse Pets, I also got to cover the grand opening of their strip club with all the girls.
Derek Jeter was there unofficially, I got to hang with him for a bit but was asked not to take any photos – I of course complied. Being respectful is one of the key reasons I get invited to private events.
I like to keep things fun by being spontaneous and having a sense of humor about things – no matter what comes my way.
What are your goals for 2023?
My goals for 2023 are to network more and shoot more video. Also, branding the photos and videos helps me have more of a social media presence and I want to keep doing that.
Most of all, I just want to continue my legacy in the adult industry and not be a guy with camera.
