ASACP Targeted in Email Spoof Attack
CYBERSPACE – Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) announced today that it has been the victim of an email spoof attack. The unknown attackers sent forged email messages, purportedly from ASACP, warning recipients that they were under suspicion of possessing child pornography and would be turned over to the police if they did not immediately contact ASACP. The spoof resulted in a flood of emails from concerned surfers.“ASACP has been receiving many emails from terrified and confused adults and teenagers who have responded to the bogus email they received,” read a press release from ASACP. “Almost all responses have been that they don’t visit adult websites and are concerned that if they unknowingly have CP on their systems, to know what they can do to get rid of it.”
The spoofed email also stated that ASACP stood for “Association of Sites Advocating Child Porn.”
ASACP is requesting that those people who have received the bogus email contact joan@asacp.org and forward the bogus email so that it can be used in an ongoing investigation aimed at unmasking the originators of the spoof attack.
Formerly known as Adult Sites Against Child Porn, ASACP is an industry-sponsored organization that fights against child pornography on the internet. ASACP provides a hotline for surfers who wish to report instances of child pornography on websites. Its members also agree to operate by a professional Code of Ethics designed to help protect children from inappropriate encounters.
