Art Museum Challenges Anti-Porn Law
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Adult retailers in Indiana have a new teammate in their battle to have a new state law declared unconstitutional: the Indianapolis Museum of Art.The American Civil Liberties Union, adult and mainstream bookstores and publishers across the spectrum joined the fray as soon as the new law was passed. If it’s allowed to stand, it will require all retailers to register with the state and pay an annual fee if they sell or intend to sell or might accidentally sell any kind of broadly defined “sexually explicit” material. The law is set to take effect July 1st.
According to IMA Chief Executive Officer Maxwell Anderson, some of the books sold in the museum’s gift shop contain artistic depictions of nudity that would make the museum subject to the law.
State Rep. Terry Goodin (D-Crothersville), who authored the law, said it was designed to prevent adult businesses from hoodwinking local zoning boards into granting undeserved business licenses.
