Well known as an outspoken individual with both many fans and many enemies, the former Director from the Free Speech Coalition spoke with co-hosts YNOTBob and LAJ on the Hump Day Lunch Show. Topics of conversation included the AIM’s Sharon Mitchell, the Free Speech Coalition, Internet pornographers, the .xxx domain name proposal, and sex with dead chickens.
Margold has worked in the adult industry since the 1970’s, originally as a reported, and later as a porn star. Asked about his adult industry experience, Margold explains that he created a number of industry organizations, including the Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Heath Care Foundation and the Protecting Adult Welfare (PAW) Foundation.
“After I started working within the industry I figured the best thing to do in order to preserve the industry was to start protecting it, and I put together various organizations,” explained Margold. “In 1994, I put together my most important organization, the Protecting Adult Welfare Foundation, or www.pawfoundation.org … in 1998 I gave birth, sort of a breach birth, to AIM.”
AIM is currently under the direction of Sharon Mitchell, who has recently come under some amount of fire relating to the industry’s AIV outbreak. Margold told host YNOTBob that he is uncomfortable referring to Sharon Mitchell as a doctor:
“I will not denigrate doctors by calling her a doctor,” said Margold. “She’s a PhD in Human Sexuality from the Institute of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, and the institute that ten, twelve years ago I asked the guy who ran it, ‘Can I have a degree, please sir, can I have some more?’ The guy looked at me and said, for ten thousand dollars I’ll send you one in the morning … that ‘doctor’ on her coat really turns my insides out.”
Asked if he agreed with some industry voices who have called for Mitchell to step down from her current position with AIM, Margold answered the question directly:
“Well, I think that Sharon should walk away from AIM while AIM is still viable and take her act on the road where she can become a Mother Theresa and preach the gospel of what she’s been doing and capitalize on it,” said Margold. “When I gave [AIM] to her it was solvent, and it’s not anymore. So, I rest my case.”
Margold also described the reaction he received from a past Free Speech Coalition president when he initially decided to start PAW:
“When I created Protecting Adult Welfare to watch over the emotional stability of the adult industry, I was viciously attacked verbally by the president, then president, of Free Speech [Coalition], who said, ‘You’re got going to get paid for this.’ And I said, ‘There’s no dollar sign in the word cause.’ And he hit the table so hard I think he broke his hand, and said, ‘I want this man off the Board,’ to which of course the Board looked at him like a cuckoo clock and said, ‘Cuckoo, cuckoo, off the board?’ [They actually] got rid of him. Because, my whole intention is to keep the letter ‘x’ alive and well in the entertainment alphabet.”
A few months ago, Margold voluntarily resigned from the Free Speech Coalition’s Board of Directors, a move that came just shortly after the departure of former Executive Director Bill Lyon. Asked about the changes at Free Speech, Margold claimed that he resigned because the Free Speech Coalition was offered a large sum of money in echange for his departure.
“What happened with the Free Speech Coalition, and it was probably the saddest moment of my life other than when my beloved viper finally vanished into legend,” said Margold. “I had been on the Board for fifteen years, I had gone through all the upheaval, I had kept it together … but what happened is that a band of enemies … began to gnaw at the spinelessness of the Free Speech Coalition and convinced them that they would give one-hundred thousand dollars to Free Speech if I resigned. And I figured, if I was worth a hundred thousand dollars, which quite frankly I may never make it my entire life, I figured, well alright, it’s for the good of the industry … I would resign. Well, guess what … they haven’t received a penny.”
Margold said that he maintains a good relationship with the organization, hopes for its continued success, and will re-apply for a position on the Board during the next election.
“I have no interest in abandoning Free Speech, they abandoned me,” said Margold. “The Free Speech Coalition is a bunch of people who enjoy being on the Board of Directors, but don’t have time to fulfill their own destiny.”
Last year, the Free Speech Coalition voted down a motion to support the creation of a .xxx domain name extension, but since Margold’s departure, the organization has changed its position. Asked about the possible creation of this extension, Margold explained why he feels it would be a bad thing for the industry.
“For all these years, adult entertainment industry has tried to elevate itself above being labeled,” said Margold. “The minute you go into something called .xxx, you climb right back in to the ghetto you tried to escape … I think it would set us up with all the ducks in one pond. Why do you want all your assets and all your asses on the firing line under one .xxx and then easily extinguishable by … a puritanical government?”
Yet Margold doesn’t seem to be a fan of the adult Internet industry. Referring to “internitwits” and “internuts,” Margold said that the adult Internet industry has an unhealthy view of its own world.
“The Internet itself is… I refer to it as a family of basically hateful hamsters up on a barbwire treadmill trying to shred the industry that they feed off of apart,” said Margold. “I have never read such unrelenting hatred of the industry by the people who live off of it.”
Known for being a straight talker, a fact that has won him both many enemies and many friends, Margold showed a bit of his color by describing one of his more wild encounters… with a chicken. A dead chicken. Two of them.
“There are lots of crazy stories,” said Margold. “Most of them are magnified way out of fact into myth. The one that I’m accused of the most is having sex with a couple of chickens. These were lot live chickens … it was 1981, I had already gotten off twice [filming on a movie set] … and I still had a pretty good looking erection, and I noticed that there were a couple of cooked chickens sitting on the table. And I had always had the fantasy of seeing what it felt like, so I stuck my dick in one of them and ripped it apart and threw it on the ground, then I went after the second one … when I was ripping the second one apart the bone broke, and I didn’t realize chicken bones were sharp, and deep into my hand, I’m looking at the scar right now, so I pulled out the bone, blood was shooting out, Paul Thomas [said], ‘My God, he’s fucking the chicken!’ That’s grown into this legend of my going into an entire barnyard and screwing every animal there.”
Margold also spoke about a pair of upcoming fundraisers that he is promoting as a benefit for PAW and other entities.
“May 29th is the Carnal Car Wash at 9650 DeSoto in Chatsworth, all day Saturday. Come out with your camera and shoot a bunch or women rolling around in soap suds and water. $25 to get your car washed, and who knows what else. Sunday is the big event. Sunday, May 30th is Bowling for Scholars in Torrance, and that’s a $30 ticket, or five for $125.”
