“Adults Only” Website Label to be Offered by ASACP
LOS ANGELES, CA – The adult online profession has taken a few PR hits recently as government officials increasingly push for mandatory adult website labeling in the belief that it will offer parents greater power in filtering the internet’s content. Today the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) announced that it will trademark and offer an “adults only” label, suitable for the industry.“There are now at least three bills in Congress which attempt to make labeling mandatory,” explains Joan Irvine, ASACP executive director. “We have to move ahead now, since there will be a lot of work involved.”
Because of increased pressures from Congress, Irvine says that ASACP’s timeline has been accelerated as regards the subject of website labeling. The organization had recently launched an “Online Town Hall” feature at www.ASACP.org/townhallboard for the general discussion of industry topics and issues, and to provide ASACP with information about industry member’s preferences. The Town Hall page will remain online through July 17th.
The goal of ASACP is to offer a “standard adult industry label” that would both allow parents to filter sites bearing it, as well as further prove the industry’s willingness to work to limit the exposure of adult viewing materials by minors.
In order to achieve this goal, ASACP anticipates working with filtering software, search engine, and browser companies.
Irvine assures webmasters that “The increasing credibility ASACP has gained with government and mainstream companies, thanks to its child protection efforts on behalf of the adult entertainment industry, would carry over to an ASACP label, as well.”
