KYOTO, JAPAN – An adult website operator in Kyoto, Japan was arrested for violating the country’s wired telecommunications law when his attempt to spam cell phones with an advertisement for a dating website resulted in a communications equipment malfunction.According to the Mainichi Daily News, Fuminobu Kimura, 37, caused nearly 410,000 undeliverable emails to flood a website server when they were returned due to unknown addresses. The spam messages had used another man’s domain name and the returned emails were sent to the server associated with that domain name. The flood overwhelmed communications equipment and led to the malfunction.

According to Kyoto police, this was the first incident of someone being arrested for violating Japan’s wired telecommunications law in a case that involves spam.
