Adelphia Bows To Pressure, Drops Hardcore Porn
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO – Under pressure from family “values” groups, Adelphia Cable has decided to reverse its recent decision to add hardcore adult programming to its cable pay-per-view lineup. The fifth largest cable company, Adelphia had decided earlier this month to offer hardcore adult programming provided by Playboy Enterprises Inc. However the Mississippi-based American Family Association put pressure on Adelphia and asked its members to push President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to prosecute Adelphia for obscenity.
“Some concern has been expressed over this type of adult programming. Adelphia will remove it from all of its systems,” said Paul Jacobson, a company spokesperson for Adelphia.
Adelphia had not carried adult programming for more than five years. Company founder John Rigas previously dropped the softcore adult channel Spice after declaring that he found such programming to be immoral.
Earlier this month, Adelphia surprised many when it announced a deal with Playboy Enterprises to supply hardcore adult entertainment to the Southern California market. It took only a few weeks for Adelphia to be persuaded to reverse that decision.
The company, with over 5 million subscribers, filed for bankruptcy in 2002. Since then, Rigas and his son were convicted of conspiracy, bank fraud and securities fraud. They will be sentenced this month.
