2nd Annual TLAgay Awards Honor 13
YNOT – The 2011 TLAgay Awards singled out 13 gay adult content producers for recognition, including some as-expected category winners and a few surprises.
Now in their second year, the awards were established by gay adult entertainment e-tailer TLAgay.com in order to give fans a voice in selecting the best gay movies, studios, talent and sex toys. With a 35-percent surge in public voting over the inaugural event, the company’s staff believes it has found a winning formula: have the staff determine the categories, and allow the public to do the rest.
“From the day voting started, we all had a feeling in the office that it was going end up being even bigger than last year,” said Erik Schut, managing director of parent company TLA Video. “The final tally this time around hit nearly 40,000 ballots cast — and those were the real votes. Yeah, a few folks out there tried to spam and/or auto-bot vote, but those were all disqualified. That’s a huge increase from the nearly 30,000 that were cast last year.
“Clearly fans love being able to choose the winners, and to us at TLA their overwhelming response is nothing short of a positive shout-out to the entire industry,” he added.
This year’s lineup included a new category: the TLA Choice Award, which was bestowed by the TLAgay.com editorial staff. The downtown New York City publication PAPER Magazine and its editorial director Mickey Boardman were declared the recipients and given the title “Best Not-in-the-Biz Industry Supporter” for ongoing advocacy of the gay adult industry.
Iconic director Chi Chi LaRue and her company Channel 1 Releasing snagged two of the 12 fan-determined awards: Must-Own Movie of the Year and Content Producer/Studio of the Year.
“How exciting,” LaRue exclaimed. “Whether people admit it or not, awards are always an honor. For [Must-Own Movie of the Year] F*ck U, [F*ck U star] Brent Everett and all the winners from C1R, we’re very honored and appreciative. Thanks to the TLA fans for loving this little movie and everything we do at C1R.com.”
Everett picked up an individual award as Performer of the Year.
“Obviously I wouldn’t be here without you,” he told fans. “You’ve been by my side watching me grow as a performer. I hope you keep supporting me and watching to see what comes next.”
Str8Cam Lube, a relative newcomer to the industry, nabbed Favorite Accessory/Sex Toy, leaving the product’s developer in a state of shock.
“I originally madeStr8Cam Lube just for me to use during my shows,” Str8Cam Jeff said. “I had no idea people would respond to it so well [as a commercial product]. I’m totally new to this, so this is amazing.”
Lucas Entertainment founder and Chief Executive Officer Michael Lucas seldom seems to be left out of awards presentations, and the 2011 TLAgay Awards proved no exception. He and co-director Mr. Pam received the nod for Director of the Year.
“This has been one of [the company’s] best years to date in terms of our creative and commercial output, and I’m extremely pleased that fans have reacted so well,” Lucas said. “Since joining our team, Mr. Pam has consistently topped her previous effort, and I’m happy she is getting recognized for it. The best is yet to come from Lucas Entertainment.”
